Robert Browning (Camberwell, Londen, 7 mei 1812 – Venetië, 12 december 1889) was een van de belangrijkste Engelse dichters van het Victoriaans tijdperk, geprezen om zijn beheersing van de dramatische monoloog en zijn levendige psychologische beschrijvingen. Zijn bekendste werk was The Ring and the Book (1868–69), het verhaal van een Romeinse moordzaak in 12 boekdelen. Naast zijn belang voor de poëzie is Browning ook heel bekend om zijn passionele relatie met de populaire dichteres Elizabeth Barrett, die ook zijn vrouw werd.

Robert Browning is een van de twee grote zuilen waarop de victoriaanse poëzie rust - de andere is Alfred Tennyson. Nochtans waren deze twee dichters heel verschillend: Tennyson was introvert en melancholiek, terwijl Browning open, sociaal en optimistisch was. Tennysons poëzie is melodieus en gepolijst, terwijl Browning opzettelijk 'harder' en 'onpoëtisch' klinkt, op de toon van een levendig gesprek. Hedendaagse critici en lezers vinden zijn werk dan ook moderner, niet alleen omdat hij meer alledaagse, eigenzinnige taal gebruikt, maar ook om zijn interesse in de menselijke psychologie en zijn meer sensationele onderwerpen.
