Randall Jarrell

Randall Jarrell (6 mei 1914-14 oktober 1965) was een Amerikaans dichter, literair criticus, kinderauteur, essayist en romanschrijver.

Enkele van de prijzen die hij tijdens zijn leven ontving, waren een Guggenheim Fellowship voor 1947-48, een beurs van het National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1951 en de National Book Award voor poëzie in 1961.

Zijn reputatie als dichter was pas in 1960 stevig gevestigd toen zijn National Book Award-winnende verzameling The Woman at the Washington Zoo werd gepubliceerd. Vanaf dan leek Jarrell zich los te maken van de invloed van William Auden en de New Critics. Hij ontwikkelde een stijl die modernistische en romantische invloeden vermengde, met karakterschetsen en dramatische monologen die doen denken aan het werk van William Wordsworth. Zijn laatste bundel, The Lost World, gepubliceerd in 1965, wordt door veel critici beschouwd als zijn beste werk.

Tot het bekendste werk van Randall Jarrell behoren gedichten over de Tweede Wereldoorlog, zoals The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner uit 1945. Het gaat over de dood van een boordschutter in een Sperry-baltorentje op een Amerikaanse bommenwerper:

The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,

And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.

Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,

I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.

When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.
