The Carstens family, originally from Hamburg, has a relatively large number of people who served in the Dutch military, often as (very) high-ranking officers. One of those was Georg Frederik August Carstens (1843-1922), who became an Infantry Major. He married the Frisian lady Geeske Haverschmidt, daughter of a wine merchant and local chemist, and cousin of the Dutch poet Francois Haverschmidt, better known in the Netherlands under his pen name Piet Paaltjens.
The son of Georg was army General (Generaal-Majoor) Nico Carstens. At the time of the second world war, Nico had succeeded Jules Alting van Gesau as General Major. His predecessor had died unexpectedly on March 13, 1940. Nico had earlier been sidelined for this or a similar job because of political complications around building up the defense in view of an increasing German threat. He had been advocating such measures, but that view was politically unpopular. However, events proved him right. Thus, he was suddenly one of the three top military men in the country who had the sad duty to surrender the country to the Germans, after the government had fled to the UK. His son Herman was also an artillery officer, and both were eventually interned in camp Brandenburg near Berlin, in 1942. Conditions were bad and worsened during the war. Nico became the leading imprisoned officer there (the “Kampoudste”) and as such he was often forced to take the lead in standing up to the Nazi camp leaders there on behalf of the other prisoners there. He died from the consequences of malnutrition and maltreatment in the months before the final German collapse, and Herman only just survived. [2][3]
