Erik L.J.G. Mertens (geboren 10 februari 1965), MD, FEBOphth is stichter, CEO en medisch directeur van Medipolis Eye Center in Antwerpen (Wilrijk).[1]

Biografie

Dr. Mertens studeerde af aan de universiteit van Antwerpen in 1991. Vervolgens zette hij van 1991 tot 1995 zijn carrière in de oogheelkunde verder en bestudeerde hij refractiechirurgie, cataractchirurgie, hoornvliestransplantatie en behandelingen om een leesbril overbodig te maken. Hij richtte in 2009 in het Belgische Antwerpen (Wilrijk) een nieuwe multidisciplinaire kliniek op met de naam 'Medipolis, Antwerp Private Antwerp Clinic'. Medipolis is het enige oftalmologische centrum in België dat het KIWA-kwaliteitscertificaat behaalde.[2]

Dr. Mertens studeerde in oktober 2015 af aan de Kellogg School of Management, Evanston, VS, als Physician CEO. Hij is momenteel directeur en oogchirurg van het Medipolis Eye Center in België. Dit oogcentrum is gespecialiseerd in de preventie en behandeling van oogaandoeningen, afwijkingen en in de chirurgie van het voorste oogsegment.

Wetenschappelijke bijdrage

Dr. Mertens gebruikte zijn expertise om specialist te worden op het gebied van refractiechirurgie en kleine incisie cataractchirurgie. Met zijn uitgebreide expertise in refractiechirurgie schreef hij meer dan 400 wetenschappelijke artikels voor nationale en internationale congressen en gaf hij meer dan 600 presentaties, zowel nationaal als internationaal. Hij verricht ook live chirurgiesessies op nationale en internationale congressen.

Dr. Mertens is medisch hoofdredacteur van Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today.[3] Hij is ook lid van het internationale redactiecomité van Journal of Refractive Surgery en World Journal of Ophthalmology. Hij is tevens wetenschappelijk recensent voor ‘Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Journal of Ophthalmology en Journal of Refractive Surgery.

Erik Mertens is hoofdinstructeur en moderator van diverse cursussen over behandelingen om brillen en contactlenzen overbodig te maken. Hij voerde in september 2012 de eerste femtoseconde laser cataractoperatie uit in België en tot op heden meer dan 4200 van deze behandelingen. Hij ontving de 'ASCRS filmfestivalprijs' voor de beste video op het gebied van refractiechirurgie op het Symposium van de 'American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery 2004'.[4][5] Hij was 'Arthur Culler Memorial Lecturer 2005' aan de Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.[6]

Hij ontving op het OB 2019 congres (Academia Ophthalmologica Belgica) de prijs voor 'best rapid fire presentation'[7] (vroeg-klinische ervaring met een nieuw Selective Laser Capsulotomy apparaat (SLC)).

Hij was hoofdonderzoeker in 5 GCP Clinical Trials (Acufocus (IC-8-lens in 2015), Ophtec[8](2016), Medicem[9](2016-2017), STAAR Surgical[10](2018-2019), Allotex (2018-2020)) en subonderzoeker in vijf andere clinical trials.
