It is one of the legendary Pokémon that premiers in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Cresselia in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Cresselia's name is most likely a combination of the words crescent, a moon phase, and Selene, the Greek Titaness of the moon, referring to its relationship with the moon.

Physical Characteristics

Cresselia are exclusively female Pokémon. Their bodies are shaped a bit like that of Porygon2. Their bellies are yellow, while their backs are a light blue. They have an ornament on their heads that resemble a crescent moon, and also have three rings on their torsos that look similar to the rings of Saturn or electromagnetic fields projected from planets/stars. These rings are translucent. They have two small pink arms that resemble those of Latios and Latias. The multitude of crescent shapes on their bodies are most likely the basis for their name, Cresselia. Their appearance resembles a swan. Light particles are given off by their veil-like feathers when they fly.

In the Video Games

Cresselia made its first appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS, alongside many other new Pokémon.

It is one of the legendary Pokémon, and the second female-only legendary after Latias, being encountered late in the game at Fullmoon Island, once the player has the National Pokédex. A sailor takes the player to this island in hopes of obtaining the Lunar Wing to save his son of a nightmare induced by Darkrai. When encountered, it runs to different locations in Sinnoh, similar to the legendary beasts Entei, Raikou, and Suicune in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, FireRed, and LeafGreen; or like Latias and Latios in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald; as well as Mesprit, also from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
