Richard Chevenix Trench

Richard Chevenix Trench (Dublin, 9 september 1807 – Eaton Square, Londen, 28 maart 1886) was een Iers anglicaans bisschop, dichter, filoloog en taalfilosoof.

Trench studeerde theologie en werd anglicaans priester, later deken van Westminster, en in 1864 aartsbisschop van Dublin. In zijn jonge jaren gaf hij een aantal dichtbundels uit: Justinus Martyr, and Other Poems, Sabbation, Honor Neale, and other Poems en Poems from Eastern Sources. Hij toonde zich hierin een getalenteerd student van William Wordsworth. Daarna concentreerde hij zich op taalstudies. Hij publiceerde een Study of Words (1851), English, Past and Present (1855) en A Select Glossary of English Words (1859). Zijn voordracht On some Deficiencies in our English Dictionaries (1857) gaf een eerste impuls voor het samenstellen van de Oxford English Dictionary.
