Orange Is the New Black (vaak afgekort tot OITNB[1][2][3][4]) is een Amerikaanse televisieserie van schrijver Jenji Kohan voor Netflix. De serie is gebaseerd op de autobiografie Orange Is the New Black door Piper Kerman.[5] De 13 afleveringen van het eerste seizoen werden ineens uitgebracht door Netflix op 11 juli 2013. Op 9 juni 2017 werd het vijfde seizoen online gezet. Op 27 juli 2018 volgde het zesde seizoen. Vanaf 26 juli 2019 is het zevende en tevens laatste seizoen te zien.

Verhaal

Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) wordt veroordeeld tot 15 maanden gevangenis voor het transporteren van drugsgeld voor Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), een internationale drugssmokkelaar en voormalig geliefde. Chapman verruilt haar comfortabele leven in New York voor een oranje overall. In de vrouwengevangenis komt ze in aanraking met strijd en kameraadschap binnen een opmerkelijke groep gevangenen.

Gespeeld door Taylor Schilling. Piper is tot 15 maanden gevangenis veroordeeld omdat ze met haar ex-vriendin Alex medeplichtig was aan internationale drugssmokkel. In de gevangenis moet ze zich proberen te gedragen, maar reeds in de eerste weken maakt ze enkele vijanden. Ze moet met pesterijen van medegevangenen omgaan, onder andere omdat zij een hogere opleiding genoten heeft dan de andere gevangenen. Ze werkt eerst in de elektriciteitswerkplaats van de gevangenis, later maakt ze ondergoed voor een maatschappij en daarna werkt ze in een onderwijsproject aan de bouw van een nieuw gebouw.

Gespeeld door Laura Prepon. Alex is een veroordeelde drugsdealer en de ex-vriendin van Piper. Ze is opgegroeid in een arme familie. Ze verlangt niet erg naar haar vrijlating, in tegenstelling tot andere gevangenen, omdat ze toch niet weet wat ze daarna met haar leven moet aanvangen.

Sam Healy

Gespeeld door Michael Harney. Sam is een van de oudere bewakers van de gevangenis, hij is de counselor van enkele gevangenen onder wie Piper. Hij is lesbofoob en laat dit ook blijken tijdens zijn werk.

Galina 'Red' Reznikov

Gespeeld door Kate Mulgrew. Zij werd samen met haar man veroordeeld omdat ze werkte voor de Russische maffia. Red wordt door de andere gevangenen gevreesd en gerespecteerd.

Larry Bloom

Gespeeld door Jason Biggs. Larry is een freelancejournalist en de verloofde van Piper. Het nieuws dat Piper een lesbische relatie had met Alex en daarbij criminele activiteiten uitoefende, valt hem zwaar. In het begin van de serie bezoekt hij Piper vaak, maar wanneer hij hoort dat Alex ook in de gevangenis verblijft, gaat hij steeds minder en minder op bezoek.
