Herman Charles Hoskier esq. (12 november 1864 – 8 september 1938), was een bankier en antiquair, nieuwtestamenticus en tekstcriticus, geboren in Engeland, later genaturaliseerd tot burger van de Verenigde Staten. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog was hij met zijn vrouw actief in het American Volunteer Ambulance corps in Frankrijk.
Leven
Zijn vader, Herman Hoskier (1832–1904), was een medestichter van Brown, Shipley & Co. en een bankier bij de Foreign Finance Company. Later was hij een directielid van de brouwerij Guiness.
Herman Charles studeerde aan Eton College.
Hij had een grote collectie munten uit de Romeinse oudheid, die in 1907 op de veiling werd verkocht[1][2] en verkocht ook op andere momenten wel eens antieke objecten.[3] waaronder een collectie boeken, die verkocht werd in 1914.[4]
Voor zijn verdiensten bij het verzorgen van gewonden tijdens de oorlog in Frankrijk, werd hij opgenomen in de Legion d’Honneur en verkreeg een Croix de Guerre.
Zijn zoon Ronald sneuvelde als piloot.
Als tekstcriticus verdedigde Hoskier het Byzantijnse teksttype tegenover het Alexandrijnse teksttype. Hij collationeerde vooral de manuscripten van de Openbaring, namelijk elk manuscipt van de Openbaring djat vóór 1918 ter beschikking stond.
Op 28 juni 1932 gaf de Universiteit van Amsterdam hem een eredoctoraat.[5]
