De meeste woordenboeken Oudgrieks zijn bedoeld voor vertalers die iets uit het Grieks naar een moderne taal (bijvoorbeeld [[Engels]]) vertalen. Het Woodhouse-woordenboek geeft voor Engelse woorden een vertaling in klassiek Attisch Grieks. Sidney Chawner Woodhouse, M.A., (Fulham, Middlesex, Engeland, 1871[1] – Wandsworth, Londen, Engeland, 6 maart 1955[2][3][4]) was een schrijver en taalkundige.

Hij werd geboren als zoon van dr. Thomas James Woodhouse, arts aan het Royal Hospital for Incurables, en Florence Woodhouse (geboren Chawner).[5] Na zijn schooltijd aan de Westminster School, ging hij naar de universiteit van Oxford. Hij was hoogleraar in Christ Church, Oxford.[6]

Tot zijn werken behoren enerzijds geïllustreerde verhalen voor de jeugd, en anderzijds werken over de Grieks-Romeinse Oudheid. Zijn Engels-Oudgrieks woordenboek wordt nog gebruikt. De meeste woordenboeken Oudgrieks zijn bedoeld voor vertalers die iets uit het Grieks naar een moderne taal (bijvoorbeeld Engels) vertalen.
